On the afternoon of March 29, 2013, Professor Siti Syamsiyatun and Professor Bernard Adeney-Risakott from the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies of Gadjah Mada University held a seminar entitled “Islam and Rise of Indonesia.” The seminar was sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies and World Ethics Institute Beijing. Professor Glenn Shive hosted the seminar. He is the Dean of Hong Kong America Center at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Students from Peking University attended the seminar, many from the Cultural China Talent Program.
The seminar is divided into two parts. In the first part, Professor Bernard Adeney-Risakott briefly introduced the history and development of the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies, as well as Indonesia’s multi-religious domestic situation. In the second part, Director of the Consortium Prof. Siti Syamsiyatun discussed the Consortium’s research findings on feminism and Indonesian women’s social statuses. She pointed out the important role religion plays in the lives of Indonesians and the impact of religion on Indonesian women.
