Opening ceremony of “Peking University World Ethics Institute” was held at Stanford Center at Peking University (10/29/12)


October 29, 2012, at 10 am, the opening ceremony of “Peking University World Ethics Institute” was held at Stanford Center at Peking University. Zhou Qifeng announced the establishment of the Peking University World Ethics Institute and Tu Weiming as the director of the institute. Zhou Qifeng pointed out that the conflict of ideologies and interests has brought the human society into the morass of killing each other. The concept of “world ethics” provides a moral direction for global citizens and societies, and also a code of conduct for our daily life. At the same time, as the formation of a new ethics of human responsibility, its new interpretations of the ancient Chinese spiritual civilization depend on the new vision of Chinese ideological academia.


Xu Jialu pointed out in his speech that mankind is facing an unprecedented dual environmental and social crisis. We still haven’t found a sustainable and harmonious way of human and nature together, nor a alternate co-prosperity road of different civilizations. Only rely on the market economy and scientific rationality cannot solve the problems of human survival, the core issues of ethic of responsibility is unavoidable. We must explore the topic of the ethics of responsibility from all aspects of the political, social, philosophical and religious. Therefore, he set up high hopes for the institute that it will take root in traditional ideas and provide concrete and viable solutions for the current situation.

Professor Hans Küng, theologian of University of Tübingen and honorary president of the National Development Research Institute of Peking University Professor Lin Yifu delivered a speech on how to carry out the world ethics research. Hans Küng pointed out that the concept of the world ethics has become increasingly clear from the beginning until now, that is: There is no peace between nations without the peace between religions, there is no peace between religions without dialogues between religions, there is no dialogues between religions without sharing ethical values and standards, the establishment of the world ethics institute of Peking University will be very important to help promote world ethical research. Lin Yifu, from the point of view of economic history, explains that the release of china’s economic growth potential needs to be carried out synchronal with the rejuvenation of the Chinese culture and must learn from western ethics, especially the experience of economic ethics.


Professor Tu Weiming, director of the World Ethics Institute and dean of the Institute of Advanced Humanistic Studies explained to the scholars from all over the world the purpose of the institute: Learn from each axial civilization and non-axial civilization, and the ethical wisdom of the indigenous people to establish a creative research team rooted in traditional Chinese culture through a variety of ways of dialogues of civilizations and put the spiritual wisdom of the Chinese civilization and modern Chinese cultural elements into the world ethics to let the world ethics, in particular, the ethics of the global economy to be more open and diverse and have more global meanings.

At the luncheon after the end of the opening ceremony, the party secretary of Peking University Zhu Shanlu gave a speech. He expected that the establishment of the Peking University World Ethics Institute will make an important contribution to the internationalization of Beijing University, and he also firmly believes that the research on the ethics of responsibility with Chinese characteristics will be very valuable to the international academia.
